5 Early Signs of Heart Disease That Are Often Ignored

Your heart often sends warning signals long before the condition becomes serious. Get to know these 5 early signs that are often ignored.

Heart disease remains the number one cause of death in Indonesia. Ironically, many sufferers only become aware of their condition once it has reached a serious stage. Yet the heart often sends warning signals much earlier.

1. Chest Pain or Pressure

Discomfort that feels like pressing, squeezing, or burning in the centre of the chest is the most common symptom of coronary heart disease. The sensation may last several minutes or come and go. Never ignore chest pain even if it feels mild — consult a doctor immediately.

2. Sudden Shortness of Breath

Finding it hard to breathe during light activities such as walking to the bathroom, or even while resting, can indicate that your heart is working too hard. This condition is often associated with heart failure or narrowing of the coronary arteries.

3. Unusual Fatigue

Excessive tiredness without a clear cause, especially in women, is a sign that is frequently overlooked. When the heart does not pump blood efficiently, the body's organs lack oxygen, making you tire easily — even during activities that previously felt light.

4. Irregular Heartbeat (Palpitations)

Palpitations — the sensation of your heart pounding hard, beating too fast, or "skipping a beat" — can be normal on occasion. However, if they occur frequently, last more than a few seconds, or are accompanied by dizziness and shortness of breath, see a doctor right away.

5. Swelling in the Feet or Ankles

Oedema (fluid build-up) in the feet, ankles, or legs can indicate that the heart is failing to pump blood effectively, causing fluid to accumulate in the body's tissues. This condition is often accompanied by sudden weight gain over a few days.
