Understanding the Routine Laboratory Tests Everyone Should Have

Routine lab tests aren't just for sick people. They are a health investment that helps detect problems before they become serious.

Laboratory tests are not just for people who are ill. Routine lab checks are a health investment that helps you monitor your body's condition objectively before problems develop into serious conditions.

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

The most basic test, measuring the three main components of blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It helps detect anaemia, infections, and blood clotting disorders. Recommended at least once a year.

Blood Glucose

  • Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG): measured after 8–10 hours without food. Normal value: <100 mg/dL.
  • Random Blood Glucose (RBG): can be measured at any time. Normal: <200 mg/dL.
  • HbA1c: reflects average blood glucose levels over the past 3 months. Normal: <5.7%.

Lipid Profile (Cholesterol Panel)

Measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. Important for assessing the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. Recommended annually for those aged 20+ or more often if risk factors are present.

Liver Function (SGOT/SGPT)

SGOT and SGPT enzyme levels rise when liver tissue is damaged. Important for anyone taking regular medication or with a history of hepatitis.

Kidney Function (Creatinine, Urea)

Measures the kidneys' ability to filter metabolic waste. Chronic kidney disease often has no symptoms — which is why early detection through lab tests is crucial.

At the Scanmelabs Clinical Laboratory, all of the tests above are available with a turnaround time of 2–4 hours and digital reports via WhatsApp or email.
